WelcomeThis page was created as part of my Master's in Education final project from California State University at Bakersfield. Here you will find a step-by-step guide for installing Mahara as well as my literature review on the subject of using e‑portfolios as an educational tool. I would like to thank Dr. Penelope Swenson, Ph.D., for serving as project chair and Mr. Lloyd Curtis and Ms. Stacey Stansberry for serving as committee members. Their input was much appreciated. This page was created in Mahara and I hope you find it useful! Sincerely, Tzvi Daum
To view the Mahara installation guide which includes detailed instructions, screenshots and links to video tutorials, please click here. The guide is targeted to individual teachers or parents who would like to create their own Mahara e-portfolio website but don't have experience with creating websites or setting up databases. This detailed guide will walk you straight through the process. There is no need to be afraid!
The following six video tutorials accompany the guide and can be viewed on YouTube.com.
1) Installing Mahara Part I - How to set up a domain name and web hosting service 2) Installing Mahara Part II - How to set up a MySQL database for Mahara via the control panel 3) Installing Mahara Part III - How to download and install the Mahara installation files 4) Installing Mahara Part IV - How to create a config.php file 5) Installing Mahara Part V - How to set up a cron job in cPanel 6) Installing Mahara Part VI - The QuickInstall option

PS Considering the installation process for Moodle and Mahara share many similarities, I decided to create an installation video for Moodle which you can veiw here. It was nice to see the video was picked up by the Moodle community and added to their Youtube installation channel. The PDF Mahara guide should also be useful as the steps for installing Moodle and Mahara are very similair. The main difference is that the creation of a config.php file is a little more automated in Moodle. Otherwise, the procedure is largely the same. |
